Collective Resignation Statement from the Syrian Journalists Association

We, the undersigned members of the Syrian Journalists Association, hereby announce our collective resignation from the Association, following a firm conviction that it has deviated from the values and principles for which it was founded, and no longer fulfills its role as an independent professional umbrella dedicated to defending press freedom, safeguarding the dignity of journalists, and upholding the independence of media work.

Over the past period, we have observed a shift in the Association’s discourse and practices, from a professional framework that is expected to maintain equal distance from all authorities, to a position marked by political bias—particularly in a context characterized by deep social and political divisions, and a growing tightening of restrictions on media work through legislation and practices that limit press freedom and reproduce mechanisms of control and repression.

We have also documented a clear failure to adhere to the Association’s internal regulations, especially those related to the prohibition of hate speech and incitement. Practices, statements, and published posts by certain members were overlooked, despite their explicit contradiction with journalistic ethics and with the unifying principles that are meant to govern syndical work away from political or ideological alignments.

The continuation of our membership in an association that no longer reflects the aspirations of Syrian journalists, does not protect their professional independence, and fails to comply with its own internal regulations, would constitute implicit acceptance of a course of action that we find incompatible with our ethical and professional responsibilities.

Accordingly, we hereby declare our collective resignation, reaffirming our firm commitment to the values of free journalism, the right of Syrians to independent and responsible media, and our rejection of all forms of repression, hate speech, and the politicization of syndical and media work.
