Press statement on developments in Aleppo
Yekiti Media
The General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council in Syria expresses its deep concern over the ongoing clashes in the predominantly Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafieh in Aleppo, where tens of thousands of civilians reside.
The artillery and missile bombardment of the two neighborhoods and the ongoing clashes in civilian neighborhoods since yesterday have resulted in civilian casualties and dozens of injuries, in addition to the displacement of thousands of families from the two neighborhoods and neighboring areas, which threatens to exacerbate the humanitarian and security situation in the city.
The Syrian army’s classification of the two neighborhoods as military zones and its call for the evacuation of civilians is a dangerous sign that could result in further civilian casualties and repercussions that could spread to various areas of Syria.
In this regard, we offer our deepest condolences to the families of the martyrs and wish a speedy recovery to the wounded. We call on all parties to immediately cease military operations, lift the siege on the neighborhoods, and allow humanitarian and medical aid to enter to assist the wounded. We also call for recourse to dialogue, an end to media escalation, the protection of civilians, and the avoidance of involving residential neighborhoods in military conflicts.
We also stress the need for the Syrian administration to initiate a comprehensive political process that addresses outstanding issues and protects the constitutional rights of all Syrian components, foremost among them the rights of the Kurdish people, in order to contribute to achieving stability and building sustainable peace in Syria.
