The General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council in Syria is following with grave concern the wheat purchase price for the current season, which was approved by the Ministry of Economy of the Syrian Interim Government. This price falls short of the actual costs of agricultural production, and do not meet the minimum rights of farmers who have borne significant burdens this season amid difficult economic and living conditions.

The rise in prices of fuel, fertilizers, and seeds, in addition to transportation costs and labor wages, has made agriculture a heavy burden on farmers, at a time when this sector was supposed to receive support and care, as it is the cornerstone of food security and the national economy.

We at the General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council believe that the announced pricing is unfair and out of step with the current economic reality, nor does it reflect the extent of the suffering and losses incurred by farmers. This threatens the future of the agricultural sector and is driving many farmers to abandon the cultivation of strategic crops, foremost among them wheat.

Accordingly, we demand the following:

– An urgent review of wheat purchase prices to ensure they reflect the true costs of production and provide a fair profit margin for farmers.

– The adoption of economic and agricultural policies that support the agricultural sector and alleviate the burdens on farmers.

– The provision of agricultural inputs at affordable and subsidized prices.

-Protecting farmers from exploitative policies and excessive taxation that increase their suffering and exacerbate their livelihood crises.

Supporting farmers and protecting the agricultural sector is a national and moral responsibility that cannot be ignored, because safeguarding agricultural production is essential to maintaining food security and social and economic stability in the country.
