Statement on the Removal of Syria from the List of State Sponsors of Terrorism

Yekiti Media

On 24 August, the US Department of State issued a decision to remove Syria from the list of state sponsors of terrorism, in a move that will ease the economic restrictions imposed on the country and open up broader prospects for economic recovery, reconstruction and the resolution of various issues affecting its citizens.

The Kurdish National Council in Syria welcomes this decision and regards it as an opportunity to promote international openness and improve living conditions and public services, emphasising that to benefit from it requires the accelerated establishment of a decentralised democratic state, the consolidation of the rule of law, and the constitutional guarantee of the national rights of the Kurdish people and all other Syrian communities on the basis of equality and national partnership.

The Council also emphasises the need to create the conditions for the safe, dignified and voluntary return of refugees and displaced persons, and to provide them with assistance, including those displaced from Sere Kaniye and Geri Sibi (Tal Abyad), as well as to continue combating terrorism and extremism and building inclusive national institutions, thereby contributing to stability and development in the country.
