Statement regarding President Nechirvan Barzani’s visit to Syria

The Kurdish National Council in Syria welcomes the historic visit by His Excellency Mr Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, to the Syrian capital, Damascus, on 3 August 2026, the first of its kind since the fall of the former regime, and the official reception he received from His Excellency the President of the country, Mr Ahmad al-Sharaa, and senior state officials.
The Council expresses its deep appreciation for the warm welcome extended to President Nechirvan Barzani and his accompanying delegation at the People’s Palace; this visit is regarded as an important political step that will strengthen dialogue and understanding between the two sides and develop relations between Syria and the Kurdistan Region, thereby serving the interests of both peoples and contributing to the consolidation of security and stability, as well as supporting efforts to build a new Syria and bring an end to the suffering of the Syrian people.
The Council affirms that this visit embodies the positive and diplomatic role played by President Nechirvan Barzani in bringing viewpoints closer together and promoting stability at both the Iraqi and regional levels.
It also represents an opportunity to strengthen Kurdish-Arab relations, consolidate the national partnership between all sections of the Syrian people, and advance the national dialogue process, leading to a lasting solution to the Kurdish issue within the framework of a unified, democratic and decentralised Syria that guarantees the national rights of the Kurdish people and safeguards the rights of all Syrians.
The Council expresses its hope that this visit will open up new horizons for understanding and cooperation between Syria and the Kurdistan Region, and emphasises the importance of continuing dialogue and coordination in a way that enhances security and stability and serves a future based on partnership, justice and peace for the hundreds of thousands of Syrian refugees in the region.
