Joint Statement from the Families of Kurdish Detainees Held by the PYD

With the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, Syrians across the nation hoped for a brighter future and the safe return of all detainees and abductees to their families. However, this hope remains unfulfilled for many, as hundreds of thousands of detainees and abductees remain missing, leaving their families in a state of agonizing uncertainty.

Among those whose fates remain unknown are dozens of Kurdish politicians, activists, and defected officers held in detention by the PYD. In the interest of Kurdish unity and to avoid divisions that could jeopardize Kurdish participation in Syria’s political transition, we reiterate our urgent call for the immediate release of all Kurdish detainees and abductees. This action is necessary to end the ongoing political repression in Syrian Kurdistan, unite the Kurdish political stance, and advance the Kurdish cause in the context of a future Syria.

Furthermore, we hold the leadership of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the PYD fully responsible for their safety. We also call upon influential international actors in Syria and United Nations organizations to pressure the SDF to disclose the fate of these individuals.

The following is a list of the abducted individuals:

Bahzad Dorsin
Nidal Othman
Jamil Omar
Ahmed Sido
Idris Alo
Fouad Ibrahim
Amir Hamed
Ramadan Mahmoud Haji

Additionally, eight abducted Kurdish officers and their civilian escort remain missing:

Brigadier General Mohammed Khalil Ali
Colonel Mohammed Haytham
Colonel Hassan Oso
Colonel Mohammed Gula Khairi
Lieutenant Colonel Shawqi Othman
Major Bahzad Na’so
Captain Hussein Bakr
First Lieutenant Adnan Barazi
Civilian escort: Ragheb Mahmoud
