
Statement from the General Secretariat of the Kurdish Council regarding the PKK’s announcement to disband and lay down arms

The Kurdish National Council is following with great interest the recent developments related to the announcement by the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) at its recent congress to cease armed action and dissolve the party, in response to the call of its leader Mr. Abdullah Ocalan.
The Kurdish National Council considers this step to be an important and positive political shift that will contribute to enhancing the chances of peace and stability in Turkey and the wider region.
The Kurdish National Council appreciates this move towards a peaceful path and sees it as a real opportunity to launch a serious peace process leading to a comprehensive political solution to the Kurdish issue in Turkey that guarantees the legitimate national rights of the Kurdish people within a democratic and constitutional framework.
The Kurdish National Council affirms its support for every effort to end the conflicts and realize the aspirations of the Kurdish people in Turkey, and expresses its hope that this step will be accompanied by constructive and serious initiatives by the Turkish state and all concerned parties to ensure the success and sustainability of the peace process.
The Kurdish National Council stresses that supporting peaceful paths has always been a principled choice, and has expressed this through its support for Mr. Abdullah Ocalan’s call to end the conflict and establish peace.
The Kurdish National Council believes that the consolidation of stability in Turkey serves the common interests of the peoples and countries of the region.
