Statement issued by the General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council in Syria

The General Secretariat of the Kurdish National Council in Syria is following with great concern the celebrations called for by President Ahmad al-Sharaa, which have been accompanied by inflammatory speeches of a racist and sectarian nature. These gatherings and platforms have been used to spread hatred and target the Kurdish people and other components of Syrian society, instead of being an occasion to promote the values of brotherhood and mutual respect.

The dominance of threatening and inflammatory language at these gatherings and the sectarian dimension they have been given pose a direct threat to coexistence and civil peace, as well as to the efforts and aspirations of Syrians for freedom, dignity, and change since the outbreak of the revolution. These practices also undermine any chance of building a civil state that guarantees the rights of all its citizens and push the country toward further division and fragmentation.

We also stress the need to hold accountable those voices that incite hatred and destabilize civil peace.

While we call on the transitional administration in Damascus to take a clear stance rejecting such rhetoric, we emphasize that the path to stability begins with the explicit recognition that Syria is a multi-ethnic, multi-religious, and multi-sectarian country, and that its constitution must guarantee the rights of all, including the national rights of the Kurdish people within the framework of the country’s unity.

The General Secretariat believes that the Damascus administration’s response to the joint Kurdish delegation’s call for dialogue on the future of the country and the rights of the Kurdish people will put an end to all such calls that incite strife.

In conclusion, the Kurdish National Council affirms its commitment to working for a decentralized, democratic, pluralistic Syria, where the dignity of all citizens is protected and national and religious diversity is respected, far from rhetoric of treason, incitement, and violence.
